When patients ask me which aesthetic treatment delivers the greatest return on investment, they’re often expecting me to say Botox, filler, or the latest laser technology.
Instead, my answer is much simpler.
Sunscreen.
As an aesthetic nurse practitioner, I appreciate what modern cosmetic treatments can accomplish. They can restore volume, soften expression lines, improve texture, and stimulate collagen in remarkable ways. But healthy, youthful skin begins long before you step into a treatment room. It starts with the habits you practice every morning.
The skin is the body’s largest organ and one of its hardest-working. Every day it faces ultraviolet radiation, pollution, heat, and environmental stressors that gradually break down collagen and elastin—the structural proteins responsible for firm, smooth, resilient skin. Over time, this cumulative damage appears as fine lines, uneven pigmentation, rough texture, and loss of elasticity.
Perhaps the most surprising fact is that much of what we think of as “natural aging” is actually the result of chronic sun exposure. Research suggests that up to 80% of visible facial aging is caused by ultraviolet radiation rather than the passage of time alone.
Fortunately, that story doesn’t end there.
One of the most encouraging developments in dermatology is the growing body of evidence showing that consistent daily sunscreen use doesn’t simply prevent future sun damage—it has also been shown to improve visible signs of photoaging and allow the skin to repair existing sun damage over time. By shielding the skin from ongoing ultraviolet exposure, sunscreen allows your body’s natural repair processes to restore healthier, more resilient skin.
In other words, every morning you wear sunscreen is an investment in the skin you’ll have years from now.
If you ask what I personally reach for each day, it’s a tinted mineral sunscreen.
I’m a longtime fan because it does more than provide broad-spectrum UV protection. The iron oxides found in tinted formulations also help protect against visible light, which can worsen pigmentation concerns such as melasma and post-inflammatory discoloration. Just as importantly, a beautiful tinted sunscreen evens skin tone, creates a healthy glow, and often replaces the need for foundation altogether.
It’s one of the few products that effortlessly combines skin health with cosmetic elegance.
Of course, sunscreen is only one piece of healthy skin. A thoughtful skincare routine—including antioxidants, retinoids, gentle cleansing, and proper hydration—helps preserve collagen and maintain the skin’s barrier function. Professional treatments can then build upon that foundation, enhancing skin quality while addressing concerns that topical products alone cannot.
One of my favorite philosophies in aesthetic medicine is this: protect what you want to keep.
The most beautiful skin isn’t necessarily the skin that’s had the most procedures. More often, it’s the skin that has been cared for consistently over many years.
Whether you’re just beginning a skincare routine or refining one you’ve followed for decades, it’s never too late to prioritize your skin’s health. Beautiful aging isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about making thoughtful choices today that allow you to look like the healthiest, most confident version of yourself tomorrow.
